Making your own ammo
What sites, resources and tools would come in handy to make your own ammo?
And what metals or alloys would be best to have on hand to make slugs? Steel? Copper? Silver (for vampires)? |

I reload for rifle and pistol. I buy most of my reloading supplies at local gun shows or stores. tools to do it are available at Cabela's, MidwayUSA, and others places like Gander Mt. I think Bass Pro Shops, quit carrying reloading supplies, except maybe black powder. For casting bullets, you'll of course need the dies and lead. I cast for .38 spl and .44 mag. I use wheel weight lead for that. Fancier bullets for reloading, I buy already made. |

Just about the best online/mail order outfit is www.midwayusa.com
The best equipment kit to get started id the Lee Precision Anniversary Kit.....search just that at midwayusa......I think the price is about $90....I just posted the link in another thread the other day..... It has all the basic equipment you will need.....just buy dies....probably get lee....make sure to get carbide for all pistol dies. Better stockpile all components right now.....brass, primers, powder, bullets. You can buy molds and casting equipment to cast bullets from scrap lead....but the other 3 components must be purchased.......you could scratch make black powder in a jam.....but better to just buy a crap load today.... |

Re: Making your own ammo
I do my own handloading and bullet casting. Here are my recommendations:
1. Own these books - "The ABCs of Reloading" (http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpag...eitemid=837228); "Lyman Reloading Handbook" (http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpag...eitemid=217655) 2. Best reloading forum: www.thehighroad.us / www.thehighroad.org (there is an ownership dispute going on) 3. Best information on bullet casting: http://castboolits.gunloads.com. 4. Best supply source: www.midwayusa.com. GO SLOWLY AND READ VORACIOUSLY. Better yet, find someone local to mentor you. |
Re: Making your own ammo
FWIW, I had one bad experience with a Lee seater. I buy Lyman dies now.
All of my casting supplies are Lee, however. They do their part. I too go mostly through Midway. Their shipping has been top notch. I've tried single stage and progressive presses. The singles are what I end up using because I don't have time for tweaking progressives, and I like to witness my powder charge in a very direct and immediate way. That said, I do use the progressive for case sizing from a collator/feeder. Spend for a good polisher (though you'll get guys who use the washing machine) and think about using lizard bedding for your media. I like the Lyman reloading manual, because it presents a variety of powders and bullets used, not just proprietary stuff like Speer or Nosler might provide. |
